Malaysia - day 1

One thing that I didn't mention in my last post was that I was questioning my judgement for wearing sandals on the flight. It was chilly, so I had to use the blanket to cover the lower half of my body. Any doubt was quickly erased as soon as we went outside the airport. We hopped onto a tour bus, and our guide Sandy was kind enough to buy a snack for us (it was like a Twinkie). Our first stop was a mosque. Everyone was hungry (even after the snack) though, so she took us to a food court where she said the "BBQ chicken and pork rice" was good. I put quotations because there is no pork to be found in the mostly-Muslim Malaysia. The BBQ pork looks just like the real thing, but it was actually made of chicken. Monica and Sandy helped me take photos, and I did the same for Monica.
Our next stop was an item on my bucket list: the Petronas Towers. Photos do not do the buildings justice. It's more impressive in person. At the base of the Towers is a huge mall that has a lot of national and international brands. We saw tour buses of people from mainland China who were on a designer shopping tour. We had a bit of time to shop on our own. Monica and I were lured into a supermarket by the wonderful aromas from the bakery. Next to the bakery was a stand that sold dates stuffed with almonds, cashews and walnuts. This was one of the gifts that I bought for my co-workers and it was a huge hit.
After congregating at Louis Vuitton, it was back on the bus to head to a restaurant for dinner. This was probably our best meal in Malaysia. They had some interesting dishes. The next stop was to check in at our hotel. The Sheraton was the best we would see on the tour. It was truly what a 4 or 5 star hotel should be like. I was going to stay in and watch TV, but my tour mates convinced me to go out. It was a shame we had dinner and the BBQ rice earlier in the day because we went to Jalan Alor which was very famous for street food. We missed out on wings, BBQ fish and all sorts of other goodies because of dinner and the BBQ chicken and pork rice. Some of my tour mates indulged in durian though (blech). On the way back, we bumped into Peter, and went back to the hotel to get a good night's sleep.
